Chiropractic services

Chiropractic Services at South Island Physiotherapy

Our chiropractors are trained in a range of manual and adjunctive techniques. Treatment is always personalized and progresses in line with your recovery, not a fixed schedule.

Spinal and Extremity Adjustments

Precise, controlled spinal adjustments are used to restore proper joint mobility and reduce pain in the spine and extremities. This foundational chiropractic technique targets restricted segments that contribute to pain, stiffness, and compensatory movement patterns.

Manual Therapy and Joint Mobilization

Hands-on joint mobilization, soft tissue release, and manual stretching are used to address restrictions in the musculoskeletal system. These techniques complement adjustments to improve range of motion and reduce pain.

Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy delivers high-energy acoustic waves to injured tissue, stimulating repair and reducing chronic pain. It is particularly effective for tendinopathies, plantar fasciitis, calcific shoulder conditions, and muscle adhesions. Shockwave is available as a standalone treatment or integrated into your chiropractic care plan.

Active Release Technique (ART)

ART is a soft tissue system used to identify and release tight muscles, adhesions, and fascial restrictions. It is frequently used to address repetitive strain injuries, nerve entrapments, and chronic tension patterns that do not respond to traditional manual work alone.

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

Specialized stainless steel instruments are used to apply controlled microtrauma to affected soft tissue, promoting fibroblast activity and reducing fascial restrictions. Commonly applied for myofascial pain syndrome, chronic tendinopathies, and post-injury scar tissue.

Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS)

DNS retrains the stabilizing muscles of the spine and extremities by restoring the deep postural reflexes that are often inhibited following injury or prolonged pain. Improving neuromuscular control reduces re-injury risk and supports lasting structural stability.

Progressive Exercise Programs

Recovery built only on passive treatment rarely holds. Our chiropractors design progressive, structured exercise programs that build strength, improve movement patterns, and embed the gains from manual work. This is the foundation of durable recovery.

Custom Foot Orthotics

Biomechanical foot assessment and custom orthotic prescription are available for patients with foot, knee, hip, and lower back pain caused or worsened by gait and alignment imbalances.

What to Expect

Your First Chiropractic Appointment

We know that visiting a new clinic can feel daunting. Here is what happens from the moment you book.

Intake and History

Your chiropractor will take a thorough health history, asking about your current complaint, previous injuries, lifestyle, and goals. Nothing about your care is rushed.

Assessment

A physical examination covers posture, range of motion, joint mobility, neurological screening (where indicated), and movement quality. This builds the clinical picture behind your pain.

Diagnosis and Education

Your chiropractor explains what they found and why it matters. We believe that an informed patient recovers better, so we take time here.

Treatment

Depending on the findings, your first appointment may include spinal or extremity adjustment, manual therapy, soft tissue work, and initial exercise guidance.

Care Plan

Before you leave, you will have a clear picture of how many visits are recommended, what those visits will involve, and what you can do at home to accelerate your recovery.

Why Patients Choose Us for Chiropractic

Integrated clinic model

Your chiropractor can co-manage your care with physiotherapists, kinesiologists, and RMTs without you having to coordinate between multiple clinics.

Evidence-based practice

Treatment decisions are grounded in current clinical evidence, not tradition or habit. We will tell you what the research supports, and we will be honest when it is limited.

Progressive rehabilitation, not just passive treatment

Getting adjusted is a starting point, not the whole plan. Durable recovery requires physical adaptation, and that comes from progressive exercise and movement retraining.

“I’ve been seeing both Chris and Kevin for over five years, and I can’t say enough good things. They’re incredibly knowledgeable, approachable, and make every session feel comfortable and productive. They give great advice and simple things to work on at home. I’ve been seeing Chris once a week for almost three months now, and I genuinely look forward to every session. I’ve struggled with chronic shoulder pain for most of my life, and thanks to Chris, I finally feel like real, lasting improvement is possible. If you are looking for a new physiotherapist or chiropractor I would highly recommend them!”

“This is a fantastic outfit. The vibes are good here, which you want when going to a place to heal pain. The front of house staff are a delight and always positive – which says a lot about the team culture. The practitioners are at the top of their game: from the excellent physio (shout out to Alec who could have a second career as a motivational speaker – but don’t you dare quit being a physiotherapist!) to the expert chiropractor (thank you Kevin for the compassion and skill!) I have been treated with respect and kindness and optimism through a very long and frustrating healing process.”

“I have nothing but great things to say about my visits at South Island Physiotherapy. I have only seen Kevin Sommerfeldt twice, but have had a great experience during my chiropractic sessions with him. He is very considerate with his adjustments and has had great insights about my on-going carpal tunnel issues. The front-desk team are also fantastic; very kind and great at what they do!”

FAQs: About Chiropractic in Victoria

Chiropractic care is not currently covered under the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) for most patients. However, it is commonly covered by extended health benefits through employers and private insurers. Call us at (778) 433-4900 and we can confirm what your plan covers before you book.

Chiropractors in Victoria most commonly treat back pain, neck pain, headaches, shoulder and hip joint pain, knee pain, and sports-related soft tissue injuries. At South Island Physiotherapy, our chiropractors also assess and treat postural conditions, nerve-related symptoms, and TMJ issues. If your condition is better suited to physiotherapy or another discipline, we will tell you that directly.

The key difference is integration. Your chiropractor has direct access to physiotherapists, registered massage therapists, and kinesiologists under the same roof. If your recovery requires soft tissue work, exercise rehabilitation, or manual physiotherapy in addition to chiropractic adjustments, that care can be coordinated as part of a single plan rather than managed across multiple clinics.

This varies considerably by condition, severity, and how long the problem has been present. During your first appointment, your chiropractor will give you a realistic estimate of the number of visits expected and what progress should look like at each stage. We do not use open-ended treatment plans or pressure patients into ongoing care beyond what their clinical picture supports.

Spinal adjustments typically produce a popping or cracking sound, which is a release of gas from the joint space. Most patients find adjustments comfortable or experience mild temporary soreness afterward, similar to starting a new exercise. If you are nervous about adjustments, let us know. We can use mobilization and soft tissue techniques as an alternative starting point.

Yes. At South Island Physiotherapy, chiropractic and physiotherapy are delivered by separate practitioners but are fully coordinated when both disciplines are relevant to your recovery. Many patients benefit from both, particularly for complex musculoskeletal conditions or post-surgical rehabilitation.

We offer direct billing to most major extended health insurers. Call (778) 433-4900 before your appointment to confirm whether your specific plan is supported.
