Locally Owned, Victoria-Based

South Island Physiotherapy is locally owned and has been part of the Greater Victoria community for years. We work with athletes from minor sport associations, university programs, recreational leagues, and individual training backgrounds across Saanich, Oak Bay, Langford, and the surrounding region.

Owned and Led by Practising Clinicians

South Island Physiotherapy is co-owned by Jason Nenzel, Colin Beattie, and Alec Myring, all of whom maintain active clinical roles at the clinic. Alec Myring brings a strong strength and conditioning background to our kinesiology programming, and that expertise informs how we design and interpret athletic testing. Learn more on our about page.

Integrated Clinic: Kinesiology, Physio, RMT, and Chiropractic

Athletic testing does not happen in isolation at South Island Physiotherapy. If your assessment reveals a movement restriction or an injury history that needs addressing, our sports physiotherapy team is part of the same clinic. If soft tissue work is indicated, our registered massage therapists are available. Your performance plan and your recovery plan are coordinated, not siloed.

Athletic Testing and Coaching Services

Our Athletic Testing and Coaching Services in Victoria BC

Athlete Coaching Victoria

Athlete coaching at South Island Physiotherapy is built around your testing data. Once we have an objective baseline of your physical capacity, our kinesiologists design a coaching plan that targets the specific gaps your results revealed. This is not generic personal training. It is clinically informed coaching that connects your performance goals to your current physical reality and builds a structured pathway between the two.

Strength and Power Testing

We assess maximal and explosive strength using functional testing protocols designed for the demands of athletic performance. Results identify asymmetries between limbs, strength deficits relative to body weight, and power output across key movement patterns. This data directly informs your strength and conditioning program and helps us set specific, measurable targets for your development.

Movement Quality and Functional Assessment

Movement quality testing examines how your body moves through patterns that sport and training demand: single-leg stability, hip and shoulder mobility, landing mechanics, deceleration control, and rotational capacity. Poor movement quality under load is one of the most consistent predictors of injury. Identifying it early means we can address it through targeted active rehabilitation before it becomes a problem.

Return-to-Sport Testing

Return-to-sport testing provides objective criteria to determine whether an athlete is physically ready to return to full training and competition after injury. We use validated testing protocols to assess strength symmetry, power output, and movement quality at the point of clearance. This removes guesswork from the return-to-sport decision and gives athletes, coaches, and parents confidence grounded in data. Our sports physiotherapy team works alongside our kinesiologists to coordinate the full return-to-sport process.

Sports Performance Testing Victoria

Our sports performance testing battery gives competitive athletes a full-spectrum view of their physical capacity. We assess the performance qualities most relevant to your sport and position, generate a clear report of results, and identify the training priorities that will have the greatest impact on your performance. Testing is available as a standalone assessment or as part of an ongoing progressive exercise program.

Golf Performance Assessment (TPI)

South Island Physiotherapy offers Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) golf performance assessments through our physiotherapy and kinesiology services. These assessments are delivered by Emily Ervine (MScPT, TPI M2, CSCS) and Kinesiologist Keaton Eccleston. In a focused 60-minute session, we evaluate swing speed, mobility, and physical fitness to identify exactly where your body may be holding your game back — then build a personalized plan grounded in your results. This service is available as an initial TPI assessment (60 min) and follow-up sessions.

Youth and Adolescent Athletic Development

Young athletes have different developmental needs than adults, and training them the same way increases the risk of injury. Our kinesiologists are experienced working with youth athletes across Greater Victoria, assessing movement quality, identifying growth-related imbalances, and building age-appropriate development programs. We work alongside sports physiotherapy when a clinical component is required.

Data-Driven, Not Opinion-Driven

Most coaching decisions are made on feel, habit, or convention. Athletic testing at South Island Physiotherapy replaces that with objective data. We measure what is actually happening in your body, report it clearly, and build your program around what the numbers show. This is the difference between a program that sounds right and a program that is right for you.

The Clinical and Performance Connection

One of the most valuable aspects of athletic testing at an integrated physiotherapy clinic is the direct line between performance data and clinical assessment. If your testing reveals a deficiency that has an injury component, our physiotherapy team can assess and treat it within the same clinic. Most performance facilities cannot offer that. At South Island Physiotherapy, performance and recovery are part of the same conversation.

Alec Myring's Strength and Conditioning Background

Co-owner Alec Myring brings specific expertise in strength and conditioning to our kinesiology and athletic testing programming. His background means that the testing protocols we use and the programs we design from those results reflect genuine performance training experience, not a generic exercise library. You can read more about Alec’s background on our team page.

Long-Term Athlete Development Philosophy

We believe that sustainable athletic performance comes from building capacity progressively and intelligently over time, not from short-term training spikes. Our approach to athletic testing and coaching reflects the long-game philosophy that runs through everything we do at South Island Physiotherapy: healthspan, not just performance peaks.

Experience Across Sports and Skill Levels

We work with athletes from hockey, soccer, basketball, cycling, triathlon, golf, volleyball, and a range of individual sports across Greater Victoria. We work with high school athletes, university competitors, masters-level athletes, and recreational players. The testing protocols we use are validated across athletic populations, and the coaching we deliver is specific to the demands of your sport and your goals.

Case Study: Athletic Testing

Identifying Weaknesses to Improve Athletic Performance

Patient: Jordan F., 24

Concern

Jordan, a recreational athlete, felt like his performance had plateaued despite consistent training. He wanted to better understand where he could improve strength, power, and overall athletic ability.

assessment

A comprehensive athletic testing session was completed, evaluating strength, power, balance, and movement quality. The assessment identified asymmetries between limbs, reduced lower body power, and specific weaknesses in core and hip stability.

treatment approach

Based on the findings, a targeted strength and conditioning program was developed to address identified deficits, improve movement efficiency, and enhance overall athletic performance.

outcome

Jordan developed greater strength, improved movement quality, and saw measurable improvements in performance. He returned to training with increased confidence, a clear plan, and the ability to perform at a higher level.

Our Athletic Testing and Coaching Process

Book Your Initial Athletic Assessment

Book online at southislandphysio.janeapp.com or call us at (778) 433-4900. Let us know you are booking for athletic testing or performance assessment. We will get you set up for an appointment to discuss your sport and goals and we’ll send intake forms in advance.

Goals and History Review

At the start of your appointment, your kinesiologist reviews your sport background, training history, injury history, and what you are trying to achieve. This context shapes which testing protocols are most relevant and what we are specifically looking for in your results.

Testing Battery

We move through the testing protocols relevant to your assessment type: strength and power tests, movement quality screens, sport-specific functional assessments, or return-to-sport criteria, depending on your goals. Every test is administered with standardized protocols, so your results are meaningful and comparable over time.

Report of Findings

You receive a clear written report of your test results, including what the numbers mean for your performance and where your most significant gaps are. We walk through the findings with you so you leave with a real understanding of your current physical capacity, not just a data printout.

Program Design and Coaching Plan

Based on your results, we build a specific training or coaching plan. This may be a progressive exercise program, a strength and conditioning block, an ongoing coaching relationship, a referral to sports physiotherapy for a clinical component, or a combination. Re-testing is built into the plan at regular intervals so we can track your progress objectively.

If you want to understand your physical capacity with precision, athletic testing provides it.

The key difference is the clinical integration. At South Island Physiotherapy, if your athletic testing reveals a deficiency with an injury component, our physiotherapy team can assess and treat it within the same clinic. Your performance data and your injury history inform each other. Most standalone performance centres cannot offer that depth of clinical coordination.

Yes. Our kinesiologists are experienced working with adolescent and youth athletes across Greater Victoria. Youth athletic development requires age-appropriate testing and programming that accounts for growth, maturation, and the specific demands of early sport specialization. We assess movement quality, identify imbalances, and build programs designed for long-term development, not short-term performance spikes.

We work with athletes from a wide range of sports, including hockey, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cycling, triathlon, golf, rugby, lacrosse, track and field, and individual fitness pursuits. Our testing protocols and coaching programs are adapted to the physical demands of your specific sport and the goals you have within it.

Yes, and this is one of the strengths of our integrated model. If your athletic testing reveals a restriction or an area of concern with a clinical component, we can coordinate directly with our sports physiotherapy or registered massage therapy teams as part of the same plan.
