Find the Root Cause of Your Running Injuries and Get Back to the Kilometres That Matter

At South Island Physiotherapy, our running gait analysis is built for runners who want real clinical answers, not a generic checklist. Whether you are dealing with a recurring injury, have hit a performance wall, or simply want to understand your mechanics before one develops, our CPTBC-registered physiotherapists use running mechanics and video-based biomechanical assessments to identify exactly what is happening with your stride, load distribution, and movement patterns. Victoria runners from Saanich to Langford trust South Island Physiotherapy because we treat the cause, not just the symptom.

Why Victoria Runners Trust Us: Our Credentials and Clinical Standards

CPTBC-Registered Physiotherapists

Every running gait assessment is performed by a physiotherapist registered with the College of Physical Therapists of British Columbia. You are assessed by a credentialed clinician with the training to connect your movement patterns to your injury history and your goals, not a technician running a standard protocol.

5-Star Google Rating from 250+ Victoria Patients

Our Victoria BC clinic holds a 5-star Google rating based on more than 250 patient reviews. That consistency reflects a clinical team that genuinely invests in outcomes, not just appointment counts.

Locally Owned and Victoria-Based

South Island Physiotherapy has deep roots in the Greater Victoria community. We understand the terrain Victoria runners train on – from the tar and chip path of the Galloping Goose to the technical trails at Thetis Lake – and we factor that context into every recommendation we make.

Integrated Clinic: Physio, Kinesiology, RMT, and Chiropractic

Running injuries rarely have a single cause. Our integrated model means that if your gait assessment reveals a strength deficit, we connect you directly with our kinesiology team. If soft tissue restriction is a factor, our registered massage therapists are available. If spinal or joint mechanics are contributing, our chiropractic team is part of the same clinic. Everything you need is under one roof.

Owned and Directed by Practising Physiotherapists

South Island Physiotherapy is co-owned by Jason Nenzel, Colin Beattie, and Alec Myring. All three are active physiotherapists with clinical roles at the clinic. Jason Nenzel holds a Master of Science in Physical Therapy and serves as a Director on the Canadian Physiotherapy Association Board. You can learn more about our team on our team page.

Running and Gait Analysis Services

Our Running and Gait Analysis Services in Victoria BC

Video-Based Running Gait Analysis

We record your running on a treadmill and review the footage in slow motion across multiple angles. Our physiotherapists assess cadence, foot strike pattern, knee drive, hip extension, trunk lean, and arm swing. You leave with a clear written report of findings and a specific plan addressing what we found, whether that means a cue correction, a strengthening program, a footwear change, or a combination.

Biomechanics Assessment Victoria

A biomechanics assessment examines the underlying movement patterns and joint mechanics that drive how you run. We assess hip and ankle mobility, single-leg stability, and how your body absorbs and transfers load through each stride. This is particularly useful for runners with a history of recurrent injury. Our sports physiotherapy team brings deep experience in athletic biomechanics to every assessment.

Running Injury Physio Victoria

If you are already dealing with a running injury, our Victoria physiotherapists assess the injury alongside your gait to understand whether a mechanics issue contributed to the problem. Common running injuries we assess and treat include plantar fasciitis, IT band syndrome, shin splints, Achilles tendinopathy, patellofemoral pain, and stress fractures. Our physiotherapy service covers the full spectrum from acute assessment through return to full training.

Strength and Conditioning for Runners

Our kinesiology and strength and conditioning team builds targeted strength programs based on the specific deficits your gait assessment identifies. We focus on the hip stabilizers, glutes, calves, and foot intrinsics that running depends on. A strength program built after a clinical gait assessment is far more targeted than a generic runner training plan.

Return-to-Running Programs

After injury, returning too quickly is one of the most common causes of re-injury. We build structured return-to-running progressions based on your current capacity, your goal event or distance, and your assessment findings. Our progressive exercise programs are designed to load your body appropriately at each stage of recovery and keep you progressing without setbacks.

Athletic Testing and Performance Assessment

For runners who want a full picture of their physical capacity, our athletic testing and coaching service complements the gait analysis with objective performance data. We assess strength, power, and functional movement under load, giving you a complete baseline from which to build your training.

Custom Orthotics Assessment

For some runners, foot mechanics contribute to injury patterns. If your gait assessment reveals a structural factor that a custom orthotic could address, we offer a full custom orthotics assessment at our clinic. Orthotics prescribed through a physiotherapy assessment are grounded in clinical rationale, not a retail fitting, and are built to address what we actually found in your movement.

Clinical Depth, Not a Fitness Assessment

Many gait analyses available to Victoria runners are performed in running shoe stores or general fitness settings. There is value in those assessments, but they are not clinical. At South Island Physiotherapy, your assessment is conducted by a physiotherapist who interprets your mechanics in the context of your full clinical picture.

An Evidence-Based Process with Measurable Outcomes

Every recommendation we make is based on the clinical evidence base for running biomechanics, load management, and injury prevention. Jason Nenzel, Colin Beattie, and Alec Myring have each invested significantly in post-graduate education, and that depth of learning informs the quality of what you receive at every appointment.

We Train You, Not Just Treat You

Our philosophy is that durable recovery and durable performance come from patients who understand their own bodies. When we identify a gait fault, we explain what it is, why it matters, and how to correct it. We give you the tools to self-monitor and catch problems early.

Fast Access to an Integrated Team

Alec Myring’s background in strength and conditioning means our kinesiology integration is clinically meaningful for runners. If your assessment points to a strength deficit, you are not referred out. You receive a coordinated plan within the same clinic. For runners whose injuries involve a sports physiotherapy component, our sports physio team is part of the same integrated service.

Experience Across Victoria's Running Community

We have assessed and treated recreational joggers, trail runners, road racers, and competitive athletes across Greater Victoria. We understand what different training surfaces demand, what marathon and ultramarathon loads look like, and how the goals of a first-time 5K runner differ from a seasoned racer.

How Our Running Gait Analysis Works

Book Your Assessment

Book online at southislandphysio.janeapp.com or call us at (778) 433-4900. Let us know you are booking for a running gait analysis and mention any current injuries or concerns. We will confirm your appointment and send intake information in advance.

Clinical History Review

Your physiotherapist will spend time at the start of your appointment reviewing your running history, training load, injury history, and what you are hoping to achieve from the assessment. This context shapes how we interpret your mechanics and what we are specifically watching for when we record your gait.

Movement and Mobility Screen

Before recording your gait, we assess your mobility and movement patterns off the treadmill. We look at hip mobility, ankle range of motion, single-leg stability, and how your body moves through functional patterns. This off-treadmill baseline is critical for understanding why your gait looks the way it does.

Video-Based Treadmill Analysis

We record your running from multiple angles and review the footage in slow motion with you present. We identify patterns in your stride, foot contact, cadence, and posture and walk you through exactly what we see. The footage is shown to you directly so you can see what we are describing.

Report of Findings and Tailored Plan

You leave with a clear written report of findings and a specific plan. This may include gait retraining cues, a home exercise program, a referral to our kinesiology team for structured strength work, a sports physiotherapy follow-up, manual therapy, or a combination of these. Every plan is specific to your findings, your goals, and your timeline.

FAQs: Running Gait Analysis in Victoria BC

Our running gait analysis begins with a review of clinical history and an off-treadmill movement screen. We then record your running on a treadmill and review the footage in slow motion to assess your stride mechanics, foot strike, cadence, hip mechanics, and posture. You receive a written report and a tailored plan before you leave. The full assessment typically takes 45 to 60 minutes.

Yes. A gait analysis can identify mechanics that place excessive or repetitive load on specific tissues, often before an injury develops. Runners increasing their training load for a race, returning from a previous injury, or experiencing early warning signs like tightness or soreness in a recurring location benefit most from a proactive assessment.

Not at all. Many Victoria runners we assess are not injured at the time of their appointment. They are preparing for a race, coming back from injury and wanting to change how they run, or simply curious about their mechanics. A gait assessment is useful for any runner who wants to understand how they move and what they can do to run more efficiently and sustainably.

Wear your usual running shoes and running attire. If you rotate between more than one pair of shoes, bring both if possible. If you have had previous imaging or assessments related to a running injury, bring those notes with you. We will ask about your training history and injury history at the start of the appointment.

Yes, we offer direct billing to most extended health benefit providers for physiotherapy services. We also handle ICBC physiotherapy and WorkSafeBC physiotherapy claims where applicable. Running store gait analyses are useful for footwear fit, but they are not clinical assessments. At South Island Physiotherapy, your biomechanics assessment is conducted by a CPTBC-registered physiotherapist who evaluates your mechanics in the context of your full clinical picture: your injury history, training load, mobility, and strength. We ask why your gait looks the way it does, not just what it looks like. Our team page has full bios and credentials for every clinician.
