Evidence-Based Rehabilitation

Regain Stability, Move with Confidence, and Reduce Your Risk of Falling

For patients across Greater Victoria, balance problems and fall risk are not inevitable parts of aging or injury. They are treatable conditions that respond well to structured, evidence-based care. At South Island Physiotherapy, our CPTBC-registered physiotherapists specialize in balance physiotherapy, serving Greater Victoria patients locally and offering virtual care across BC, providing comprehensive assessments and retraining programs for adults of all ages and activity levels. Whether dizziness, a recent fall, vestibular dysfunction, or an underlying neurological condition is affecting your stability, we build individualized programs that address the root cause rather than the symptom.

Our Credentials and Clinical Standards

CPTBC-Registered Physiotherapists

Every physiotherapist at South Island Physiotherapy holds active registration with the College of Physical Therapists of British Columbia. For patients, this means every clinician treating you is accountable to the same professional and ethical standards that govern physiotherapy practice across the province.

5-Star Google Rating from 250+ Victoria Patients

Our Google rating reflects the experiences of real patients from across Greater Victoria, including Saanich, Oak Bay, Esquimalt, Langford, and surrounding communities. We never ask for generic feedback. The reviews that matter to us are specific: what changed, how it changed, and whether patients got back to the lives they love.

Locally Owned and Operating in Greater Victoria

South Island Physiotherapy is independently owned and operated by physiotherapists who live and practise in this community. Our co-owners Jason Nenzel, Colin Beattie, and Alec Myring, each bring deep clinical experience and a genuine investment in patient outcomes that you simply do not get from a franchise or corporate clinic chain.

Evidence-Based Practice Across All Disciplines

Our approach to balance retraining draws on the best available clinical evidence for vestibular rehabilitation, sensorimotor training, and progressive exercise programming. We do not rely on passive treatment alone. Our programs are built to create durable, lasting change in how your nervous system processes movement and stability information.

Led by CPA Board Director Jason Nenzel

Co-owner Jason Nenzel holds a Master of Science in Physical Therapy and serves as a Director of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association Board, contributing to the development of physiotherapy practice nationally. That depth of clinical and professional commitment shapes how every program at our clinic is designed and delivered.

Our Balance and Fall Prevention Services

Our Balance and Fall Prevention Services in Victoria BC

Vestibular Physiotherapy

Dizziness, vertigo, and unsteadiness often trace back to vestibular dysfunction. Our assessments identify the specific source, whether BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo), hypofunction, or central pathology, and deliver targeted repositioning and habituation exercises designed to restore clarity and steadiness.

Balance Retraining and Sensorimotor Training

Balance is a learned skill that deteriorates with disuse, injury, or neurological change. Our programs systematically challenge your sensory systems, musculoskeletal control, and reactive responses in a graded, safe environment. We progressively rebuild the stability and confidence that lets you move freely at home, in the community, and in sport.

Fall Prevention Programs

Falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalization in Canadian adults over 65, yet most are preventable with the right intervention. Our fall prevention programs combine a functional assessment with targeted strength, gait, and proprioception training. We identify your personal risk factors and address them directly, with the goal of sustained, long-term reduction in fall risk.

Post-Concussion Balance Rehabilitation

Balance disruption following concussion is common and often underaddressed. Our physiotherapists assess and manage post-concussion vestibular and oculomotor symptoms, including balance instability, visual motion sensitivity, and exercise intolerance. Programs are paced to your symptom tolerance and structured to guide safe return to activity.

Neurological Balance Rehabilitation

Conditions including Parkinson’s disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and peripheral neuropathy frequently affect gait and balance. We draw on current evidence in neurological physiotherapy to design exercise programs that maximize functional recovery and reduce progressive balance deficits for patients living with these conditions.

Gait Assessment and Retraining

How you walk is inseparable from how well you balance. Our running and gait analysis assessment identifies biomechanical patterns, compensations, and asymmetries that increase fall risk or reduce efficiency. This service is available for active seniors, athletes recovering from lower-limb injury, and anyone whose walking pattern has been affected by pain, surgery, or neurological change.

Why Victoria Patients Choose South Island Physiotherapy for Balance Care

A Genuine Assessment Before Any Program Begins

Balance problems have many causes and require a careful differential assessment before a treatment plan can be built. We assess vestibular function, proprioception, strength, gait mechanics, and sensory integration before recommending any specific intervention. The assessment drives the program.

Co-Owner Clinical Involvement

Our three co-owners, Jason Nenzel, Colin Beattie, and Alec Myring, are practising clinicians. When you come to South Island Physiotherapy for balance care, you are treated by experienced physiotherapists who have chosen to stay close to clinical practice because that is where meaningful patient outcomes are built.

Exercise as the Foundation of Recovery

We use manual therapy and vestibular repositioning techniques where clinically appropriate, but the durability of your recovery depends on active exercise. Every balance program is built on progressive work that teaches your body to respond, adapt, and stabilize under increasingly challenging conditions.

Integrated Access to Kinesiology and Strength Conditioning

For patients who need to progress beyond physiotherapy into active rehabilitation, our on-site kinesiology and strength and conditioning services provide a direct pathway. This continuity of care supports the transition from clinical balance retraining to sustainable, independent exercise habits.

Third-Party Billing Support for ICBC and WorkSafeBC Patients

If your balance difficulties stem from a motor vehicle accident or workplace injury, our ICBC physiotherapy and WorkSafeBC physiotherapy services include billing navigation so you can focus on recovery.

how it works

How Balance Retraining Works at South Island Physiotherapy

Initial Assessment (45 to 60 Minutes)

Your first appointment begins with a thorough conversation about your symptoms, history, and what you want to get back to. We then assess vestibular function, proprioceptive responses, strength, range of motion, gait mechanics, and sensory integration. By the end of the initial session, you will have a clear picture of what is driving your balance difficulties and a preliminary plan for how we will address it. Initial physiotherapy appointments are 45 or 60 minutes and include any relevant hands-on assessment or treatment.

Individualized Program Design

Based on your assessment findings, we design a personalized balance retraining program. This is not a generic exercise sheet. Each program is calibrated to your specific sensory deficits, strength level, fall risk profile, and functional goals. We explain every element of your program so you understand why each exercise is included and what it is intended to achieve.

Supervised Retraining Sessions

Follow-up sessions combine hands-on treatment, where clinically appropriate, with supervised balance and sensorimotor training. We progress your program based on how your body is responding, advancing the challenge systematically rather than on a fixed schedule. You will also receive a home exercise component to reinforce clinical gains between sessions.

Functional Progression and Discharge Planning

As your balance improves, we shift focus toward the specific activities and environments that matter to you. For active patients, this means return to sport or outdoor activities. For older adults, this means navigating stairs, uneven ground, and busy spaces with confidence. We do not discharge you until you have the tools and knowledge to maintain your gains independently.

FAQs: Balance Physiotherapy in Victoria BC

Balance physiotherapy is appropriate for a wide range of patients, from older adults concerned about fall risk to younger people recovering from concussion, vestibular neuritis, or lower-limb injury. If you experience dizziness, feel unsteady on your feet, have had one or more falls, or notice that your balance has declined after illness, surgery, or injury, a balance assessment at our Victoria BC clinic is a useful starting point. Our physiotherapists will assess your specific situation and be straightforward with you about whether physiotherapy is the right fit.

Vestibular physiotherapy is a specialization within physiotherapy focused on the inner-ear and brain systems that control balance, spatial orientation, and eye-movement stabilization. Conditions like BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo), vestibular neuritis, and labyrinthitis respond well to specific repositioning and habituation techniques that are distinct from standard musculoskeletal physiotherapy. At South Island Physiotherapy, our clinicians assess both vestibular and non-vestibular contributors to balance dysfunction. You can also explore our broader range of services on our physiotherapy services page.

An initial physiotherapy assessment at South Island Physiotherapy is $135 for a 45-minute appointment and $200 for a 60-minute complex assessment. Follow-up appointments range from $126 to $175 depending on length. Many extended health benefit plans cover registered physiotherapy; check your specific policy for physiotherapy coverage amounts. If your balance difficulties are related to a motor vehicle accident or workplace injury, ICBC and WorkSafeBC billing may apply. Contact our clinic to discuss your coverage before your first appointment.

The number of sessions depends on the cause and severity of your balance dysfunction and how quickly your nervous system adapts to retraining. BPPV often resolves in one to three sessions with repositioning manoeuvres. More complex vestibular conditions, post-concussion balance issues, or fall prevention programs for older adults typically involve six to twelve sessions over several weeks, with a home exercise component throughout. We will give you a realistic estimate at your first appointment based on your assessment findings.

Yes. We offer direct billing to many extended health insurance plans. Contact our clinic directly or check with your insurer to confirm your physiotherapy coverage before booking. For ICBC and WorkSafeBC patients, we handle third-party billing directly and can walk you through what is covered under your claim.

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and shoes you can easily remove. Plan to spend 45 to 60 minutes at your first appointment. Bring any relevant medical records, imaging reports, or specialist referral letters if you have them, but they are not required to book. Be prepared to describe your symptoms in as much detail as you can, including when they started, what makes them better or worse, and any activities you have been avoiding. The more specific you can be, the more targeted our assessment will be.

Not at all. Fall prevention and balance training are relevant for athletes recovering from ankle or knee injuries, individuals with neurological conditions at any age, patients post-surgery who have lost proprioceptive feedback, and anyone whose balance has been affected by medication, illness, or deconditioning. At South Island Physiotherapy, we tailor balance programs to the specific functional demands and goals of each patient, regardless of age.
