Expert Physiotherapy for the Physical Demands of Service, Active and After
Victoria is home to CFB Esquimalt, one of Canada’s major naval bases, and one of the largest RCMP detachments in BC. Policing and military service are hard on the body. The injuries that come with these jobs – duty-related back pain, shoulder and knee injuries from training, and overuse conditions from years of physical work – often need more than a standard physio approach. The injuries that come with these jobs need a clinician who understands what the work actually requires – and what getting back to it really means.
At South Island Physiotherapy, we provide evidence-based care to RCMP members, Canadian Armed Forces personnel, and veterans. We accept RCMP Health Benefits Plan coverage, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) health benefits, the Public Service Health Care Plan (PSHCP), and Canadian Forces health coverage for eligible patients, with direct billing where available.
What Sets Our Clinical Team Apart

CPTBC-Registered Clinicians Who Understand High-Demand Roles
Our physiotherapists hold active CPTBC registration and are experienced in treating injuries from physically demanding jobs. The conditions common in policing and military service – back injuries from load-bearing, shoulder and knee injuries from training, overuse pain that builds up over years – are presentations our clinicians know how to assess and treat. We build your plan around your job, not a generic recovery template.
5-Star Google Rating from 250+ Victoria Patients
Our Google rating reflects real patient experiences across every patient group we serve. Patients from demanding physical roles consistently describe a clinic that assessed their injury properly, understood the pressures of their work, and built a plan focused on getting them back to full function.

Locally Owned and Operated in Victoria BC
South Island Physiotherapy was founded and is operated by working clinicians in Victoria. Our co-owners, Jason Nenzel, Colin Beattie, and Alec Myring, treat patients every week and set the standard of care in the clinic from the inside. Our Saanich location is easy to reach from CFB Esquimalt and RCMP detachments across the Victoria area.
RCMP Health Benefits, VAC, and PSHCP Coverage Accepted
South Island Physiotherapy accepts RCMP Health Benefits Plan coverage, Veterans Affairs Canada health benefits, and the Public Service Health Care Plan for eligible patients. We know these plans well and can help you understand what your coverage includes before your first appointment. Direct billing is available for many plans so you are not out of pocket at the time of your visit.
Integrated Multi-Disciplinary Care
Injuries from policing and military service are rarely simple or isolated. Our physiotherapists, registered massage therapists, kinesiologists, and chiropractors all work under the same roof and coordinate directly. Whether you are dealing with a recent injury, chronic pain from years of service, or working toward a return to operational fitness, our team can build a joined-up program tailored to your needs.
Our Physiotherapy Services for RCMP Members and Military Personnel in Victoria BC
Musculoskeletal Injury Assessment and Rehabilitation
Injuries from on-duty incidents, physical training, and the general demands of policing or military work are the most common presentations we see in this patient group. Our physiotherapists assess the injury, identify what job demands contributed to it, and build a treatment plan with a clear return-to-duty goal. Hands-on treatment, progressive rehab, and a home program start from your first appointment.
Spinal and Back Injury Rehabilitation
Body armour, heavy gear, long shifts in vehicles, and the physical demands of the job put a lot of strain on the spine. Back pain, disc problems, and joint stiffness are common in this patient group. Our approach combines manual therapy, spinal manipulation where appropriate, and a progressive rehab program built around what your job actually puts your back through.
Soft Tissue and Overuse Injury Treatment
Years of heavy training and physical work take a toll on tendons, muscles, and joints. Tendon pain, muscle strains, bursitis, and nerve symptoms are all common. Our clinicians apply active release technique, manual therapy, and practical load management to treat these conditions and reduce the risk of recurrence when you return to full duty.
Occupational and Operational Fitness Rehabilitation
Getting back to full duty is not just about being pain-free. RCMP members and military personnel need to meet specific physical standards for daily work and deployment. Our kinesiologists and physiotherapists build active rehab and strength and conditioning programs matched to what your role actually requires of you physically.
Chronic Pain and Post-Service Rehabilitation for Veterans
Veterans often come to us with pain that has built up across multiple areas over many years of service. These cases take longer to work through and need a different approach than treating a single acute injury. Our clinicians conduct post-service presentations with the same care and thoroughness as any other case, providing honest timelines and a focus on lasting physical capacity. We accept VAC health benefits and can help you understand your coverage. Our sports physiotherapy and active rehab services are also a good fit for veterans who want to rebuild their fitness after leaving service.
Post-Surgical Rehabilitation Under RCMP or VAC Benefits
Where your plan includes approved surgery and post-surgical physiotherapy, our team manages your rehabilitation from early mobility and healing through to the functional capacity required by your role. We coordinate with your surgical team and provide all required documentation to your plan administrator throughout your recovery.
On-Duty Motor Vehicle Accident Rehabilitation
RCMP members and federal employees injured in a motor vehicle accident while on duty may be covered under both their federal benefit plan and ICBC. South Island Physiotherapy provides ICBC physiotherapy and can work with patients managing both a plan benefit and an ICBC claim at the same time. Contact us to discuss your situation and we will help you sort out the right billing approach.
Why Victoria RCMP and Military Patients Choose South Island Physiotherapy

We Understand the Physical Context of Your Role
Good rehab for RCMP and military patients starts with understanding what the job actually requires. Our physiotherapists assess your injury in the context of your duties, your fitness requirements, and the physical demands of your role. Getting you back to full duty is built into your plan from the first appointment.
Plan Navigation Support
RCMP Health Benefits, VAC, and PSHCP all have different documentation and pre-authorization requirements. Our admin team knows these plans and can help you understand your coverage, sort out what paperwork is needed, and handle the claims process on your behalf. We take as much of that off your plate as possible.
A Clinic That Covers the Full Range of What You Need
Whether you are recovering from an injury, maintaining your fitness while on duty, managing long-term pain, or transitioning out of service, South Island Physiotherapy has the services to support you. Physiotherapy, kinesiology, registered massage therapy, chiropractic, and pelvic health are all available in one clinic, with a team that talks to each other about your care.
No Unnecessary Delays
Time off duty matters for RCMP and military patients in ways it doesn’t for everyone else. We book promptly, run a thorough assessment at the first appointment, and start treatment on the same visit. If your plan requires pre-authorization, we help you get that sorted before your first visit.

Booking Physiotherapy Under RCMP or Military Benefits
Confirm Your Coverage and Any Referral Requirements
Before booking, check with your plan administrator what physiotherapy coverage you have, whether a physician referral or pre-authorization is needed, and what documentation to bring to your first appointment. RCMP Health Benefits, VAC, and PSHCP each work differently. Our admin team can also help you work through this if you contact us before booking.
Book Your Initial Assessment
Call us at (778) 433-4900 or book online through our JaneApp system. Let us know at booking which benefit plan you are using. We will confirm what we need from you before your first visit so everything is set up correctly and your appointment runs smoothly.
Assessment and Treatment Plan
Your first appointment is a full clinical assessment. Your physiotherapist will assess your injuries in the context of your role, your fitness requirements, and your return-to-duty goals. Your treatment plan is set at the same appointment with clear goals and a realistic timeline.
Active Treatment and Progress Monitoring
Each session combines hands-on physiotherapy with a progressive rehab program. Your physiotherapist tracks your progress at every appointment and adjusts your plan as needed. Where your plan requires progress reports or updated authorizations, our team handles that paperwork.
Return to Duty and Discharge
Discharge is planned to coincide with your reaching the functional goals set at your first assessment, including any fitness or operational standards relevant to your role. We clearly document your functional status at discharge and provide your plan administrator with the final reporting required to close your claim.

FAQs: RCMP and Military Physiotherapy in Victoria BC

Does South Island Physiotherapy accept RCMP Health Benefits?
Yes. We accept RCMP Health Benefits Plan coverage for eligible members and dependants. Direct billing is available where the plan supports it, so you are not out of pocket at your appointment. We recommend checking your specific coverage and any referral requirements with your plan administrator before booking. Call us with your plan details, and we will help you work out the billing process.
Does South Island Physiotherapy accept Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) benefits?
Yes. We accept VAC health benefits for eligible veterans. VAC-funded physiotherapy usually requires an active file with VAC and may need a referral or pre-approval depending on your coverage and the type of treatment. Our team can help you confirm what documentation is needed and manage the admin side of your VAC claim. Contact us before your first appointment with your VAC file information and we will sort out the process with you.
What is the Public Service Health Care Plan (PSHCP) and does it cover physiotherapy?
The Public Service Health Care Plan is a health benefits plan available to federal public servants, including many RCMP members. It typically includes physiotherapy coverage up to an annual limit. Coverage amounts and requirements vary by membership tier. We accept PSHCP and can direct bill where available. Contact us with your plan details and we will confirm your coverage and billing options before your first appointment.
Do I need a referral for physiotherapy under RCMP or military benefits?
It depends on your plan and your coverage tier. Some plans require a physician referral before benefits are paid. Others allow you to book directly. Check with your plan administrator before booking. If a referral is needed, contact your base medical officer, family physician, or RCMP health services provider to arrange it before your first appointment.
I was injured on duty in a motor vehicle accident. Which plan covers my physiotherapy?
RCMP members and federal employees injured in a motor vehicle accident while on duty may have access to both their federal benefit plan and ICBC. In BC, ICBC Enhanced Care covers physiotherapy for anyone injured in a crash, regardless of fault or employment status. South Island Physiotherapy provides ICBC physiotherapy and federal plan physiotherapy, and can help you determine the right billing arrangement for your situation. Contact us before your first appointment to discuss your circumstances.
I was injured in a workplace incident while on duty. Does WorkSafeBC apply?
Federal employees, including RCMP members, are generally covered under the Government Employees Compensation Act (GECA) for on-duty injuries rather than provincial WorkSafeBC. GECA is a federal program and works differently. If you are not sure which applies to your situation, check with your employer’s HR or health and safety team before booking. If your injury falls under WorkSafeBC, see our WorkSafeBC physiotherapy page.
What types of conditions do you commonly treat in RCMP and military patients?
Common presentations include back pain from load-bearing and prolonged operational postures, shoulder and knee injuries from training or duty-related incidents, tendon pain from repetitive physical work, muscle strains and bursitis, chronic pain that has accumulated over years of service, and post-surgical rehab following injury-related procedures. Veterans often come to us with long-standing conditions that have developed or worsened since leaving service. We approach all of these with the same clinical thoroughness as any acute injury.
