Regain Confidence and Comfort in the Body You Deserve to Feel at Home In

Our pelvic floor physiotherapy services address some of the most common and most commonly ignored health concerns affecting people across every stage of adult life. Leaking with a sneeze, pain during intimacy, pressure in the pelvic region, difficulty with bladder or bowel control: these are not inevitable, and they are not something you have to manage and live with.

At South Island Physiotherapy, our CPTBC-registered pelvic floor physiotherapists provide evidence-based assessment and treatment in a clinical environment built on discretion, respect, and genuine expertise. Pelvic health patients come to us postpartum, post-surgically, in the context of chronic pelvic pain, and at every other life stage where the pelvic floor deserves clinical attention. You do not need to have had a baby to benefit from pelvic floor physiotherapy, and you do not need to be in severe pain to justify coming in.

Trust Our Credentials and Clinical Standards

CPTBC-Registered Pelvic Floor Physiotherapists with Dedicated Certification

physiotherapy requires post-graduate training beyond the standard physiotherapy degree. Kaitlyn Wong, one of our pelvic health physiotherapists, holds a Bachelor of Kinesiology, a Master of Science in Physical Therapy, and postgraduate certifications in pelvic health and dry needling. Our pelvic health practitioners have completed the additional clinical education required to safely and effectively assess and treat internal pelvic floor dysfunction. This is a specialized scope of practice, and we take the responsibility that comes with it seriously.

5-Star Google Rating from 250+ Victoria Patients

Our Google rating reflects the experiences of patients across every discipline we offer, including pelvic health. Patients who have come to us with concerns they felt embarrassed to raise elsewhere consistently describe a clinical environment where they were heard, treated with respect, and given a clear plan that produced results.

Integrated Care Across the Full Clinical Team

Pelvic floor dysfunction rarely exists in isolation. Our pelvic health practitioners work alongside the physiotherapy, kinesiology, and chiropractic teams at South Island Physiotherapy to ensure your treatment plan addresses the whole picture. If your pelvic floor concerns are connected to low back pain, hip restriction, or postpartum recovery, that connection is part of how we plan your care.

A Clinic Built on Clinical Leadership and Continued Education

The standard of care at South Island Physiotherapy is set by co-owners Jason Nenzel, Colin Beattie, and Alec Myring, all practising physiotherapists with advanced credentials and a commitment to evidence-based practice. That culture of rigour extends to every discipline in the clinic, including pelvic health. Our practitioners pursue ongoing post-graduate education to stay current with the best available evidence.

Confidential, Respectful, and Patient-Led

Pelvic health concerns are personal. Many patients have carried these symptoms for months or years before seeking help, often because they did not know effective treatment existed or because they felt uncertain about what an assessment would involve. We explain every step before we take it. Internal examination is always optional, always explained in advance, and never performed without explicit consent. You set the pace of your own care.

Our Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Services in Victoria BC

Postpartum Pelvic Floor Recovery

Childbirth places significant demands on the pelvic floor, whether delivery was vaginal or by cesarean section. Postpartum pelvic floor patients come to us with a range of concerns: urinary leakage, pelvic heaviness or pressure, pain with returning to intimacy, diastasis recti, and difficulty returning to exercise safely. We provide a thorough postpartum assessment and a progressive rehabilitation program that respects where your body is right now while building toward where you want it to be. See also our dedicated pre and postnatal physiotherapy service for prenatal preparation and broader postpartum support.

Urinary and Bowel Incontinence Treatment

Leaking urine when you cough, sneeze, laugh, or exercise is common, but it is not normal, and it does not have to be permanent. Urgency incontinence, where you feel a sudden strong urge to reach the bathroom, is equally treatable. Our pelvic floor physiotherapists assess the specific mechanism driving your incontinence and design a targeted treatment plan that addresses the underlying dysfunction. For more details on our approach to incontinence, visit our dedicated incontinence treatment page.

Pelvic Pain Assessment and Treatment

Chronic pelvic pain, pain with intercourse (dyspareunia), vaginismus, vulvodynia, and pain during or after penetration are conditions that significantly affect quality of life and are often under-treated because patients are unsure where to turn. Our practitioners are trained to assess and treat these presentations, including internal soft-tissue work, neural desensitization, and progressive rehabilitation programs. See our dedicated pelvic pain treatment page for more details on these specific conditions.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse Rehabilitation

Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when one or more pelvic organs descend into or beyond the vaginal canal. Symptoms include pelvic pressure, a sensation of heaviness or bulging, and difficulty with bladder or bowel function. Physiotherapy is a first-line treatment for prolapse and can significantly reduce symptoms, improve pelvic floor support, and reduce the need for surgical intervention. Our practitioners assess the grade and type of prolapse and build a rehabilitation program that is appropriate for your specific presentation and your activity goals. Visit our dedicated organ prolapse treatment page for more details.

Prenatal Pelvic Floor Preparation

Preparing the pelvic floor before delivery can reduce the risk of tearing, support a smoother postpartum recovery, and give you the practical knowledge to manage pelvic floor symptoms during pregnancy. Our prenatal pelvic floor assessment covers your current pelvic floor function, birth preparation exercises, perineal massage guidance, and a plan for early postpartum follow-up. You do not need to wait until after delivery to benefit from pelvic floor physiotherapy. For broader prenatal and postpartum physiotherapy support, see our pre and postnatal care page.

Return to Sport and High-Impact Activity After Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

Returning to running, lifting, high-intensity training, or sport after pregnancy or pelvic floor dysfunction requires a staged, evidence-based approach. Loading the pelvic floor too early or without adequate preparation is one of the most common causes of persistent leakage, worsening prolapse, and chronic pelvic symptoms in active patients. Our physiotherapists provide a structured return-to-activity program tailored to your current pelvic floor capacity, sport, and timeline. For patients who need a structured conditioning program alongside their rehabilitation, our kinesiology and strength and conditioning teams work closely with your pelvic health physiotherapist.

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy for Men

Pelvic floor dysfunction is not exclusive to women. Men experience pelvic floor problems, including urinary leakage following prostatectomy, chronic pelvic pain, and bowel dysfunction. Our pelvic floor physiotherapists assess and treat male pelvic floor presentations using the same evidence-based approach applied to all our patients. Complementary care through registered massage therapy is also available for soft tissue and pelvic girdle tension that often accompanies chronic pelvic pain in men. If you are a male patient uncertain whether pelvic floor physiotherapy is relevant to your symptoms, contact us, and we will help you determine whether an assessment is appropriate.

Post-Graduate Pelvic Health Training

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a post-graduate specialty. Every practitioner providing pelvic health services at South Island Physiotherapy has completed the additional training required to assess and treat internal pelvic floor dysfunction. This is not a service we offer incidentally as part of a general physiotherapy practice. It is a dedicated clinical discipline within our team.

You Are Heard Before You Are Treated

Many patients arrive at their first pelvic floor appointment having lived with their symptoms for a long time, sometimes years. Our practitioners take the time to understand the full picture of your experience before any assessment or treatment takes place. Your history, symptoms, concerns, and goals all inform the plan. There is no rushing through intake.

Internal Assessment Is Always Optional

An internal pelvic floor examination is often the most informative way to assess muscle tone, strength, coordination, and tissue condition. We explain what this involves before your appointment and again in the room. It is always your choice. If you prefer to begin without an internal assessment, we will work with what the external assessment and your symptom history tell us and build from there.

Evidence-Based Treatment, Not Generic Protocols

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is not simply teaching Kegel exercises. Our practitioners assess the specific nature of your dysfunction, which may involve overactivity, underactivity, coordination problems, or tissue-level restriction, and design a treatment plan matched to what the assessment reveals. Many patients with pelvic floor dysfunction are actually over-activating, not under-activating, and need relaxation and down-training work rather than strengthening.

how it works

Your First Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Appointment

Book Your Initial Assessment

Book online through our JaneApp system or call us at (778) 433-4900. New pelvic health patients are booked for an initial appointment of 45 to 60 minutes. If you have questions about what to expect before booking, you are welcome to call us. We are happy to answer your questions before you commit to an appointment.

History and Symptom Review

Your appointment begins with a thorough conversation about your symptoms, history, relevant medical background, and goals. This is not a quick intake: it is a clinical conversation that shapes everything that follows. Nothing you share surprises us, and nothing leaves the room. You will not be rushed.

Physical Assessment

Your physiotherapist will explain the assessment process in full before beginning. External assessment covers posture, breathing mechanics, hip and lumbar mobility, and abdominal function. Internal assessment of the pelvic floor musculature is available and often provides the most detailed picture of your pelvic floor function. It is always optional and always performed only with your explicit consent. You may also choose to begin with external assessment only and progress to internal assessment at a later appointment if and when you feel comfortable.

Treatment and Home program

Treatment begins in the same appointment when appropriate. Your physiotherapist will explain the findings from your assessment, outline the treatment plan, and begin the first interventions. You will also receive a home program matched to your current capacity. Pelvic floor rehabilitation involves work both outside and inside the clinic, and your home program is designed to be practical and manageable.

Progressive Rehabilitation and Discharge Planning

Subsequent appointments build on the foundation of your assessment and initial treatment. Progression is systematic and based on how your body responds. Your physiotherapist will review your progress at each stage, update your program, and plan toward a clear discharge goal. Most patients with straightforward presentations achieve their goals within six to twelve sessions, though complex or long-standing conditions may require a longer course of care.

FAQs: Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy in Victoria BC

Your first appointment involves a detailed history and symptom conversation followed by a physical assessment. The assessment may include external evaluation of your posture, breathing, hip mobility, and abdominal function, as well as an optional internal examination of the pelvic floor musculature. Your physiotherapist will explain every step before proceeding. Internal assessment is always optional and always requires your explicit consent. If you prefer to begin without internal examination, your physiotherapist will work with external assessment and your symptom history.

Common indicators include urinary leakage with coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercise; urgency to urinate with difficulty making it to the bathroom in time; pelvic heaviness, pressure, or a sensation of bulging; pain during or after intercourse; chronic pelvic, hip, or tailbone pain; and postpartum symptoms including perineal pain, diastasis recti, or difficulty returning to exercise. You do not need a referral to book an assessment. If you are unsure whether pelvic floor physiotherapy is relevant to your situation, call us and we will help you decide.

No. Pelvic floor physiotherapy benefits patients across a wide range of presentations and life stages, including men, people who have never been pregnant, athletes with pelvic floor loading issues, patients with chronic pelvic pain, and older adults experiencing incontinence or prolapse. Postpartum recovery is one of the most common reasons patients seek pelvic floor physiotherapy, but it is far from the only one.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is delivered as a physiotherapy service at South Island Physiotherapy. An initial acute assessment of 45 minutes is $135. An initial complex assessment of 60 minutes is $200. Follow-up appointments are $126 for 30 or 45 minutes, and $175 for a 45-minute return assessment. Most extended health benefit plans cover physiotherapy visits. We direct bill to most major insurers. Contact us before your first appointment if you have questions about your specific coverage.

No referral is required. You can book directly through our online system at southislandphysio.janeapp.com or call us at (778) 433-4900. Some extended health plans require a physician referral for reimbursement purposes: we recommend checking with your insurer before your appointment if this is a concern.

Many practitioners recommend an initial pelvic floor assessment at approximately six weeks postpartum, once your obstetric provider has cleared you for physiotherapy. However, there is no fixed rule, and earlier assessment is appropriate in some cases. We can discuss your specific situation and timing when you contact us. Prenatal pelvic floor physiotherapy is also available before delivery as a preparation and education tool, and is something we actively encourage.
