Support Your Body Through Every Stage of Pregnancy and Postpartum Recovery
Pregnancy and the postpartum period place demands on the body that no other life experience replicates. Pain in the pelvis, hips, and lower back during pregnancy. The physical impact of labour and delivery, whether vaginal or by cesarean section. The challenge of rebuilding strength and returning to activity when your body has been through something significant. These are not problems to simply endure.
At South Island Physiotherapy, our CPTBC-registered pelvic health physiotherapists provide Victoria prenatal physiotherapy patients with evidence-based assessment and treatment across the full continuum – from early pregnancy through to postnatal physio and beyond. Whether you are managing discomfort in your first trimester, preparing your body for birth, or working through a postpartum recovery that is taking longer than you expected, we are here with the clinical expertise to help.
Victoria Patients Trust Our Clinical Standards & Certifications

CPTBC-Registered Physiotherapists with Post-Graduate Pelvic Health Training
and postnatal physiotherapy sits within our pelvic health specialization. Our practitioners hold active CPTBC registration and have completed the additional post-graduate clinical education required to assess and treat internal pelvic floor dysfunction, manage musculoskeletal conditions during pregnancy, and guide safe postpartum rehabilitation. This level of training is not standard in general physiotherapy practice.
5-Star Google Rating from 250+ Victoria Patients
Our Google rating reflects real patient experiences across every discipline we offer. Expectant and new mothers are among the patients who most consistently describe our care as being heard, treated with genuine respect, and given a plan that made a measurable difference in how they felt and moved.

A Clinic Whose Standards Are Set by Clinical Leaders
The culture of evidence-based practice at South Island Physiotherapy is established by co-owners Jason Nenzel, Colin Beattie, and Alec Myring, all practising physiotherapists with advanced credentials and a genuine investment in the quality of care delivered across the clinic. That rigour applies equally to our pelvic health and prenatal care services.
Integrated Support Across Multiple Disciplines
Pregnancy and postpartum recovery often benefit from input across more than one discipline. Our physiotherapists, registered massage therapists, and kinesiologists work within the same clinic and can coordinate your care across services. If your recovery involves pelvic floor rehabilitation, musculoskeletal physiotherapy, and a graduated return-to-exercise program, all of that can be managed under one roof.
A Safe, Respectful Clinical Environment
We understand that prenatal and postnatal appointments involve a degree of vulnerability. Every step of the assessment and treatment process is explained before it happens. Internal examination is always optional, always requires your explicit consent, and is never assumed to be acceptable simply because you have presented for pelvic health care. You are in charge of your own appointment.
Our Prenatal and Postnatal Physiotherapy Services in Victoria BC
Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy During Pregnancy
Pelvic girdle pain, symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD), sacroiliac joint pain, low back pain, round ligament discomfort, and carpal tunnel syndrome are among the most common musculoskeletal complaints of pregnancy. These conditions are not inevitable, and they are not simply something to wait out. Our physiotherapists assess the specific mechanical contributors to your pain and provide hands-on treatment including manual therapy, exercise guidance, and postural strategies that reduce your symptoms and help you move more comfortably through your pregnancy.
Prenatal Pelvic Floor Assessment and Birth Preparation
A prenatal pelvic floor assessment in the third trimester gives you a clear picture of your pelvic floor function before delivery. We assess muscle tone, coordination, and any existing tension or restriction, and provide practical guidance on perineal massage, breathing strategies for labour, and positions that may support a more comfortable delivery. Patients who come in before birth consistently report feeling more informed, more prepared, and better able to communicate with their care team during labour. This appointment also establishes a baseline for your postpartum follow-up. See our pelvic floor physiotherapy page for more detail on our pelvic health services, including treatment for pelvic pain and incontinence treatment.
Postpartum Physiotherapy Assessment and Rehabilitation
A postpartum physiotherapy assessment is one of the most valuable appointments a new mother can make. We assess your pelvic floor function, abdominal wall integrity (including diastasis recti), pelvic girdle and lumbar recovery, and the musculoskeletal demands of early parenthood. From that assessment, we build a rehabilitation program matched to where your body is right now and where you want it to be. This is not about getting back to your pre-pregnancy body on someone else’s timeline. It is about understanding your body after a significant physical event and giving it what it needs to recover well.
Diastasis Recti Assessment and Rehabilitation
Diastasis recti, the separation of the abdominal muscles along the linea alba, occurs in the majority of pregnancies and does not always resolve on its own. If you have noticed a gap, a ridge, or a doming along your midline when you do sit-ups or lift, or if you are experiencing ongoing back or pelvic instability postpartum, a diastasis assessment is a useful starting point. Our physiotherapists assess the width, depth, and functional significance of any separation and build a progressive rehabilitation program that addresses both the abdominal wall and the movement patterns that depend on it.
Cesarean Section Scar Rehabilitation
Cesarean scar tissue can adhere to underlying layers and contribute to abdominal tightness, bladder urgency, pelvic pain, and altered movement patterns long after the incision has healed on the surface. Scar mobilization, initiated once the wound is fully healed at approximately eight weeks postpartum, can significantly reduce these downstream effects. Our physiotherapists provide scar assessment and treatment as part of a broader cesarean recovery program that integrates with our pelvic floor physiotherapy service.
Return to Exercise and Sport After Pregnancy
Returning to running, lifting, high-intensity training, or sport after pregnancy requires a staged, evidence-based approach tailored to your individual recovery, not a fixed timeline. Returning too early or without adequate pelvic floor preparation is one of the most common causes of persistent leakage, worsening prolapse, and chronic pelvic symptoms in active postpartum patients. Our physiotherapists provide a structured return-to-activity program tailored to your current capacity and your specific goals. For patients pursuing a more structured conditioning program alongside their physiotherapy, our kinesiology and strength and conditioning teams work in coordination with your physiotherapist to build capacity progressively and safely.
Prenatal and Postnatal Registered Massage Therapy
Registered massage therapy is a valuable complement to physiotherapy throughout the perinatal period. Prenatal massage addresses musculoskeletal tension, edema, and the postural discomfort of a changing body. Postpartum massage supports recovery from the physical demands of labour and the chronic tension patterns of new parenthood. Our registered massage therapy team works alongside our pelvic health physiotherapists so your care is coordinated across disciplines.
Why Victoria Patients Choose South Island Physiotherapy for Perinatal Care

Postpartum Physio: Assessment Before Assumption
Every postpartum appointment begins with a thorough assessment before any treatment is prescribed. Postpartum bodies are not uniform: a person who delivered vaginally without complications has different needs than someone recovering from a difficult labour, a cesarean section, a severe perineal tear, or significant diastasis recti. We assess what is actually present rather than applying a standard postpartum protocol.
You Are Seen as a Whole Person, Not a Checklist
New parenthood is physically demanding, sleep-deprived, and emotionally layered. We recognize that the patients who come to us postpartum are managing far more than a recovery program. Our practitioners take the time to understand your full context, including your feeding situation, sleep, support structure, and personal goals, before building a plan that is genuinely realistic for where you are right now.
Continuity of Care Across Pregnancy and Beyond
When possible, we encourage patients to establish care with us during pregnancy rather than waiting until postpartum symptoms arise. A prenatal pelvic floor assessment gives us a baseline picture of your pelvic floor, helps you prepare for delivery, and allows us to build a postpartum plan before you are in the thick of new parenthood. Continuity of care with the same practitioner from pregnancy through postpartum consistently produces better outcomes.
No Referral Required
You do not need a physician referral to book prenatal or postnatal physiotherapy at South Island Physiotherapy. You can book directly online or by phone. If you are within a few days or weeks of your six-week obstetric clearance and want to plan ahead, contact us and we will help you schedule accordingly.
Your Prenatal or Postnatal Physiotherapy Appointment
Book Your Assessment
Book online through our JaneApp system or call us at (778) 433-4900. New patients are booked for an initial appointment of 45 to 60 minutes. If you have questions about what to expect, or if you are unsure whether now is the right time to book, call us. We are happy to talk through your situation before you commit to an appointment.
History, Symptom Review, and Goal Setting
Your appointment begins with a thorough conversation about your pregnancy or postpartum history, your current symptoms, any relevant obstetric background, and your goals. There is no aspect of your experience that is too minor or too personal to raise. The more clearly we understand your situation, the better we can help.
Physical Assessment
Your physiotherapist will explain the assessment process in full before beginning. Prenatal assessments typically focus on musculoskeletal function, posture, and pelvic girdle mechanics. Postnatal assessments include evaluation of the pelvic floor, abdominal wall, pelvic girdle, and any specific sites of pain or restriction. Internal pelvic floor examination is available and informative, always optional, and always requires your explicit consent.
Treatment and Home program
Treatment begins in the same appointment when clinically appropriate. Your Victoria physiotherapist will explain what the assessment found, outline the treatment plan, and begin the first interventions. You will also leave with a home program that is matched to your current capacity and practical within the realities of pregnancy or new parenthood. Programs are designed to be manageable, not overwhelming.
Progressive Rehabilitation and Clear Milestones
Follow-up appointments build systematically on your initial assessment and treatment. Your physiotherapist will set clear milestones with you, such as pain-free daily activity, return to walking, return to exercise, and return to sport, and will track your progress against them. The pace of your program is set by your body and your goals, not by a fixed timeline.

FAQs: Prenatal and Postnatal Physiotherapy in Victoria BC

When should I start prenatal physiotherapy?
You can begin prenatal physiotherapy at any stage of pregnancy. If you are experiencing pelvic girdle pain, back pain, or other musculoskeletal discomfort, earlier is generally better. If you are primarily interested in pelvic floor preparation for birth, many patients book their first appointment in the second or early third trimester, so there is adequate time to work through any findings before delivery. You do not need to be in pain to benefit from a prenatal assessment.
When can I start postnatal physiotherapy after giving birth?
For most patients, a postnatal physiotherapy assessment is appropriate around 6 weeks postpartum, once your obstetric provider has given clearance. In some cases, an earlier appointment may be appropriate to address specific concerns, such as wound-healing questions, feeding-related upper-body pain, or general postpartum guidance. Contact us if you are unsure about your specific timing and we will help you determine the right approach.
Is physiotherapy safe during pregnancy?
Yes. Physiotherapy assessment and treatment, including pelvic floor assessment, is safe throughout pregnancy when provided by a CPTBC-registered physiotherapist with post-graduate pelvic health training. We are experienced in adapting assessment positions and treatment techniques for each trimester. If you have a complex obstetric history or have been advised to restrict activity, let us know when you book, and we will discuss the most appropriate approach for your situation.
Do I need a referral for prenatal or postnatal physiotherapy in Victoria?
No referral is required. You can book directly online at southislandphysio.janeapp.com or call us at (778) 433-4900. Some extended health benefit plans require a physician referral for reimbursement purposes. We recommend checking with your insurer before your appointment if this applies to your plan.
Is prenatal and postnatal physiotherapy covered by extended health benefits?
Yes. Prenatal and postnatal physiotherapy is covered under physiotherapy benefits with most extended health plans. Prenatal massage therapy is covered under massage therapy benefits. We direct bill to most major insurers. Contact us before your appointment if you have questions about your specific coverage and we will help you clarify what to expect.
What is the difference between prenatal physiotherapy and a midwife or obstetrician visit?
Midwives and obstetricians manage the medical and obstetric aspects of your pregnancy and delivery. Physiotherapists address the musculoskeletal and pelvic floor aspects. These roles are complementary and non-overlapping. We do not provide obstetric care, monitor fetal development, or advise on labour management beyond the scope of physiotherapy for pelvic floor preparation and breathing mechanics. We work alongside your obstetric care team, not instead of them.
