Injury-Informed Programming

Serving Greater Victoria

Build the Physical Foundation That Keeps You Strong, Active, and Injury-Free

Strength and conditioning in Victoria BC looks different at South Island Physiotherapy than it does at a general gym. Our programs are designed and delivered by registered kinesiologists with clinical training in injury assessment, movement analysis, and exercise prescription. That means your program is built around your body: your history, your limitations, your goals, and the physical capacity you are working to develop.

Whether you are recovering from injury, training for a sport, returning to activity after a period of inactivity, or investing in long-term healthspan, our kinesiologists bring the clinical depth needed to design a strength-training program that delivers results without creating new problems. South Island Physiotherapy is not a gym with personal trainers. We are a registered clinical team with the expertise to bridge the gap between rehabilitation and performance.

Strength & Conditioning Standards & Certifications

Registered Kinesiologists, Not General Trainers

Every strength and conditioning program at our Victoria physiotherapy clinic is designed and supervised by a registered kinesiologist. Kinesiologists are university-educated health professionals regulated under the British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists. The distinction matters: our practitioners understand injury mechanisms, movement dysfunction, and the physiological demands of progressive loading in a way that general personal trainers are not trained to assess.

5-Star Google Rating from 250+ Victoria Patients

Our Google rating reflects hundreds of real patient experiences across every discipline we offer. Kinesiology and strength programming patients consistently describe programs that challenged them appropriately, respected their injury history, and produced measurable improvements in capacity and confidence. That record is built one program at a time.

Locally Owned and Operated in Victoria BC

South Island Physiotherapy was founded and is operated by practising clinicians. Our co-owners, Jason Nenzel, Colin Beattie, and Alec Myring, see patients regularly and hold the clinical standard of the team accountable from the inside. You are working with a clinic that has a real stake in your outcome.

Alec Myring: Strength and Conditioning Expertise at the Clinical Level

Co-owner and Physical Therapist Alec Myring brings deep strength and conditioning knowledge to the clinical team at South Island Physiotherapy. His background integrates manual therapy with structured loading and performance programming, and that philosophy shapes how our kinesiologists approach every strength and conditioning patient. You are not working with practitioners who learned from a course. You are working with a team informed by clinical and performance experience.

Injury-Informed from the First Session

We do not hand you a generic program and adjust it if something hurts. We assess your movement, your injury history, and your current physical capacity before designing a single session. That assessment informs every load, every exercise selection, and every progression decision throughout your program. It is what makes our approach genuinely different from personal training in a commercial gym.

Strength and Conditioning Services

Our Strength and Conditioning Services in Victoria BC

Injury Rehabilitation Through Progressive Strength Training

Passive care resolves pain. Strength training resolves vulnerability. After an injury, the tissue heals, but the capacity of the surrounding musculature often does not return on its own. Our kinesiologists design progressive loading programs that rebuild the strength, stability, and movement quality needed to return to full activity without recurrence. This service connects directly to the physical adaptation stage of recovery and works in close coordination with our physiotherapy team.

Athletic Performance and Sport-Specific Conditioning

Victoria has a large and active sporting community: trail runners, cyclists, rowers, hockey players, golfers, and more. Our strength and conditioning programs for athletes are built around the specific physical demands of your sport. We assess your movement patterns, identify the strength and power qualities that will most benefit your performance, and build a periodized program that fits your training and competition schedule. This service works alongside our sports physiotherapy and athletic testing offerings.

Personal Training Victoria BC: One-on-One Strength Programming

For patients who want one-on-one guidance in developing a sustainable strength practice, our kinesiologists provide personal training sessions that go beyond what a standard gym trainer can offer. Every session is supervised by a registered kinesiologist who monitors your technique, progresses your loading appropriately, and adapts the program based on how your body responds. This is personal training with clinical oversight built in.

Strength Training for Healthy Ageing and Healthspan

Muscle mass, bone density, and functional strength decline with age. The research is clear that progressive resistance training is one of the most powerful interventions available for maintaining independence, reducing fall risk, and extending healthspan. Our kinesiologists design age-appropriate, evidence-based strength training programs for active seniors and adults who are investing in their long-term physical capacity, not just managing their current symptoms.

Post-Surgical and Post-Rehabilitation Conditioning

Physiotherapy gets you back to baseline. Strength and conditioning take you beyond it. Once you have completed your acute rehabilitation following surgery or injury, our kinesiologists provide the next phase: a structured conditioning program that builds the capacity needed for the activities and demands of your life. This phase is often overlooked and is one of the most significant factors in preventing re-injury. See also our progressive exercise programs service for structured home and clinic-based exercise rehabilitation.

Workplace Fitness and Occupational Conditioning

Physical demands at work, whether in a trade, a warehouse, or a physically intensive care role, place specific stresses on the body. Our kinesiologists design conditioning programs that address the movement patterns and physical loads specific to your occupation, reducing injury risk and improving your capacity to perform your work without chronic pain or fatigue.

Why Victoria Patients Choose South Island Physiotherapy

The Clinical and Performance Background to Do This Well

Strength training prescribed without clinical context can reinforce movement dysfunction, load compromised tissue, and create new injuries. Our kinesiologists have the educational foundation to identify these risks before they become problems. Alec Myring’s integration of strength and conditioning expertise with physical therapy practice directly influences how every program at our clinic is structured.

Programs Built on Assessment, Not Assumption

Your initial appointment is an assessment. We evaluate your movement quality, injury history, current strength and capacity, and goals before prescribing a single exercise. The program you receive is specific to you, not a template adapted from a generic library.

Integrated with the Full Clinical Team

Strength and conditioning do not exist in isolation at South Island Physiotherapy. Our kinesiologists work alongside physiotherapists, chiropractors, and RMTs to ensure your program is coordinated with any other treatment you are receiving. If something changes in your presentation, the team communicates, and the program adapts.

Strength Training Victoria: Evidence-Based Progressions

Every load, exercise, and progression decision in your program is grounded in current exercise science. We do not use fad protocols or apply cookie-cutter training approaches. Progression is systematic, monitored, and adjusted based on your response. The goal is capacity that lasts, not numbers that impress for a session.

Case Study: Strength Conditioning

Building Strength for Long-Term Recovery and Performance

Patient: Tyler M., 54

Concern

After recovering from multiple episodes of low back pain, Tyler found himself repeatedly limited by flare-ups whenever he tried to return to higher levels of activity. He wanted a more durable recovery that would allow him to stay active consistently without fear of re-injury.

assessment

Assessment identified deficits in core and lower body strength, reduced load tolerance, and movement compensations contributing to ongoing strain and decreased function during activity.

treatment approach

A progressive strength and conditioning program was developed focusing on full-body strength, movement quality, and gradually increasing tolerance to higher loads and more demanding activities. Exercises were tailored to Tyler’s goals and the activities he wanted to return to safely.

outcome

Tyler achieved a more durable injury recovery with improved strength, movement confidence, and overall function. He was able to return to the activities he loves, including hiking, training, and recreational sports, with greater consistency and significantly less fear of flare-ups.

how it works

Getting Started with Strength and Conditioning at South Island Physiotherapy

Book Your Initial Kinesiology Assessment

Call us at (778) 433-4900 or book online through our JaneApp system. Your initial kinesiology appointment is 60 minutes. This gives your kinesiologist the time to complete a thorough assessment before any programming begins. Wear comfortable clothing that you can move in freely.

Movement and Capacity Assessment

Your kinesiologist will take a full history covering your injury background, activity history, current physical demands, and your specific goals. They will assess your movement quality, identify any limitations or asymmetries, and evaluate your current strength and conditioning baseline. This assessment is the foundation of everything that follows.

Program Design and Goal Setting

Based on your assessment, your kinesiologist will design a program specific to your needs and goals. You will receive a clear explanation of the rationale behind each exercise and progression, the expected timeline, and how your progress will be measured. You will leave your first appointment knowing exactly what you are working toward and why.

Supervised Training Sessions

Follow-up sessions run 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your program structure. Your kinesiologist supervises your technique, monitors your response to loading, and systematically progresses the program. Communication is direct: if something is not working or your goals shift, the program adapts.

Progress Review and Long-Term Planning

At regular intervals, your kinesiologist will conduct a formal progress review to assess how your capacity has changed, update your goals, and plan the next phase of your program. For patients returning to sport or transitioning through rehabilitation, we coordinate with your physiotherapist or other treating practitioners to ensure the plan is aligned.

“I have been working with Keaton for the past 4 months at South Island Physiotherapy. When I first started to see him I was coming off of a pretty serious injury. Right from the start, he worked with where I was at - giving me exercises that were successful even with my injury. As my body has improved he has continued to challenge me in a safe way. I have never felt so fit!”
“Kaitlyn and Alec's 'Strength for Runners' class has been amazing! Not only has it helped me stay injury-free and a more balanced athlete, but it's also been full of support and laughter. They've certainly set a new standard for what physiotherapy can and should be - highly recommend!”
“Very friendly staff, and very knowledgeable practitioners. Have me in the best shape of my life only months after a car crash. Entire process was effective, informative and fun!”

FAQs: Strength and Conditioning in Victoria BC

A kinesiologist holds a university degree in kinesiology and is regulated by the British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists. Their training covers anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, exercise prescription, and injury assessment at a post-secondary level. A personal trainer’s qualifications vary widely and are not regulated in BC. At South Island Physiotherapy, every strength and conditioning program is designed and supervised by a registered kinesiologist with the clinical background to work safely with injury histories, post-surgical patients, and complex presentations.

Yes, and in many cases we recommend it. Strength and conditioning and physiotherapy are not sequential: they are complementary. As your pain and acute symptoms are addressed through physiotherapy, your kinesiologist can begin building strength and movement capacity in parallel. Our team communicates across disciplines so your program is coordinated, not duplicated. This integrated approach is one of the real advantages of working with a multi-disciplinary clinic.

Kinesiology sessions at South Island Physiotherapy are priced as follows: initial 60-minute assessment at $120, follow-up 60-minute session at $120, follow-up 45-minute session at $90, and follow-up 30-minute session at $70. Many extended health benefit plans include kinesiology coverage. We recommend contacting your insurer to confirm your specific benefits before your first appointment. We can help you clarify coverage when you book.

Absolutely. Our kinesiologists work with patients across the full spectrum, from complete beginners building their first strength practice to experienced athletes working on specific performance qualities. If you are new to strength training, the assessment process is especially valuable because it establishes your baseline and ensures your program starts at the right intensity and complexity for your current capacity. There is no expectation of prior experience.

Yes, and we see this as one of the highest-value services we offer. Progressive resistance training is one of the most well-supported interventions in the research for maintaining muscle mass, bone density, balance, and functional independence as we age. Our kinesiologists design programs that are appropriately challenging, respectful of any existing health conditions, and focused on the physical capacities that matter most for daily life. Victoria has a large and active senior population, and we are proud to serve it.

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely, and bring any relevant medical history, imaging reports, or notes from previous practitioners, if you have them. If you have been discharged from physiotherapy recently, a copy of your discharge summary or home program is helpful but not required. Your kinesiologist will gather the information they need during the assessment. Arrive a few minutes early to complete any intake paperwork.
