Stimulate Your Body's Own Healing Response for Lasting Pain Relief
Our Victoria shockwave therapy patients come to us with conditions that have not responded to other treatments: plantar fasciitis that keeps coming back, Achilles pain that flares up every time training picks up, and calcific shoulder tendinitis that manual therapy alone has not been able to clear. Shockwave therapy, also referred to as extracorporeal shockwave therapy or ESWT, sends acoustic energy pulses directly into the affected tissue. This prompts the body to repair the area – building new blood vessels, breaking down calcium deposits, and reducing pain.
At our physiotherapy center, shockwave is included in our physiotherapy and chiropractic appointments at no extra charge. If a shockwave is the right tool for your condition, your clinician will use it as part of your session. You don’t pay a surcharge. We set our pricing this way because shockwave should be used when it helps, not only when a patient can afford an add-on fee.
Credentials & Clinical Standards That Speak For Themselves

CPTBC-Registered Clinicians with Advanced Training
Every clinician using shockwave at our clinic holds active CPTBC registration and has completed the training required to use it safely and effectively. Our team knows which conditions respond to shockwave, which settings to use, and when not to apply it. Done right, shockwave gets results. Done without proper training, it doesn’t.
5-Star Google Rating from 250+ Victoria Patients
Our Google rating reflects real experiences from patients across all the services we offer. Patients who have had shockwave as part of their care regularly describe less pain, better movement, and getting back to things they had been avoiding for months.

Locally Owned and Operated in Victoria BC
South Island Physiotherapy was founded by working clinicians and is still run by that same team. Our co-owners, Jason Nenzel, Colin Beattie, and Alec Myring, treat patients every week. When shockwave is recommended in your session, it is because your assessment supports it.
Integrated with a Complete Treatment Plan
Shockwave works best alongside other treatments, not on its own. We pair it with manual therapy, active release technique, and exercise programs so we are treating the full picture, not just the painful spot.
Shockwave Included at No Additional Charge
At most clinics, shockwave is billed as a separate add-on. At South Island Physiotherapy, it is included in the cost of your physiotherapy or chiropractic appointment. If your assessment shows shockwave is the right approach for your condition, it is applied in your session. No extra charge, no separate booking, no hassle.
Conditions We Treat with Shockwave Therapy in Victoria BC
Plantar Fasciitis and Heel Pain
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common conditions we treat with shockwave. For patients with persistent heel pain that has not cleared up with stretching and standard physio, shockwave helps the plantar fascia heal by stimulating the tissue and reducing the pain signals that keep the problem going. We usually combine it with gait analysis and calf and foot strengthening as part of a full treatment plan.
Achilles Tendinopathy
Both mid-portion and insertional Achilles tendon pain respond well to shockwave. It encourages blood flow into the tendon, settles pain at the tendon, and helps kick-start the healing process. Shockwave works best when paired with a structured loading program through our sports physiotherapy service.
Calcific Shoulder Tendinitis
Calcium deposits in the rotator cuff tendons cause sharp shoulder pain and make it hard to lift your arm overhead. Shockwave is one of the most effective non-surgical options for this condition. It breaks down the calcium deposit and reduces the associated pain. Our clinicians target the specific area identified in your assessment and combine shockwave with manual therapy and rotator cuff strengthening.
Patellar Tendinopathy
Patellar tendinopathy, often called jumper’s knee, is a common overuse injury in athletes who jump and land repeatedly. When the knee hasn’t improved with loading programs alone, shockwave is often the next step. We apply it to the patellar tendon alongside a structured loading plan through our sports physiotherapy service.
Lateral Epicondylalgia (Tennis Elbow)
Persistent outer elbow pain that has lasted more than three months and hasn’t responded to other treatment is a good candidate for shockwave. We pair it with active release technique and a progressive forearm and wrist loading program for the best results.
Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome
Pain on the outer hip related to gluteal tendon irritation or bursitis is common in active adults, especially women over forty. Shockwave is well supported for this condition and is applied to the affected tendon attachment. We combine it with load management guidance, movement retraining, and progressive hip strengthening.
Chronic Myofascial Pain and Trigger Points
Focused shockwave applied directly to trigger points can significantly reduce both local pain and referred pain. This works well alongside manual therapy and targeted exercise to address the movement habits that keep the problem coming back.
Shockwave Within ICBC and WorkSafeBC Treatment
If shockwave is the right treatment for injuries from a car accident or a workplace incident, it can be included in your ICBC physiotherapy or WorkSafeBC physiotherapy plan. We document the reasoning for using shockwave in your claim and ensure it fits within your approved treatment.
Why Victoria Patients Choose South Island Physiotherapy for ESWT

Used When It Helps, Not to Pad a Bill
We use shockwave when your assessment shows it is the right approach, the evidence supports it for your condition, and there are no reasons to avoid it. We don’t apply it to everyone who asks, and we don’t hold it back from patients who would benefit from it. No surcharge means there’s no financial pressure on either side of that decision.
Assessment First, Every Time
Shockwave is not a standalone treatment. It is one part of a broader plan. Your first appointment is a full assessment of your condition, the structures involved, what is driving your symptoms, and whether shockwave is the right fit. That assessment also shapes which settings are used, how many sessions are planned, and what else, including manual therapy and exercise, gets paired with it.
Evidence-Based Across a Range of Conditions
The research supporting shockwave therapy has grown steadily over the past fifteen years. Our clinicians stay current with that research and only apply shockwave for conditions where there is solid evidence it works. If the evidence is weak for your condition, we will tell you and discuss what else might help.

Book Your Initial Assessment
Call us at (778) 433-4900 or book online through our JaneApp system. If you are asking specifically about shockwave for a condition you already know about, mention that when booking so we can set aside the right amount of time. New patients are typically booked for 45 to 60 minutes.
Assessment and Decision
Your physiotherapist or chiropractor will assess your condition thoroughly. They will look at which structures are involved, how long the problem has been going on, what you have already tried, and whether shockwave is appropriate for you. If it is, it may be applied in the same session or at your next appointment.
Shockwave Treatment
Shockwave is delivered with a handheld device that sends rapid pulses into the target area. Each site takes about five to ten minutes. Most patients feel a pressure or tapping sensation. It can be uncomfortable in areas of significant restriction, but the intensity is always adjusted to your tolerance. Some soreness for 24 to 48 hours after is normal and expected, especially in the first couple of sessions.
Course of Treatment and Exercise
Most conditions need three to six sessions, spaced roughly one week apart. Alongside shockwave, your clinician will give you a progressive exercise program to build the strength and capacity the tissue needs to stay healthy. Shockwave alone produces shorter-lasting results. The exercise program is what makes the improvement stick.
Review and Discharge
Your clinician checks in on your progress at each session and adjusts the plan if needed. Most patients see clear improvement within their planned course of treatment. At the end, your clinician will review your outcomes and decide whether more sessions are needed or whether it is time to focus fully on exercise and self-management.

FAQs: Shockwave Therapy in Victoria BC

What is extracorporeal shockwave therapy?
Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) uses sound wave energy delivered through the skin to target injured or painful tissue such as tendons, ligaments, and muscle. The energy prompts the body to heal the area by improving blood flow, breaking down calcium deposits, and reducing pain signals. It is non-invasive, does not require any needles or anesthesia, and is done in a standard clinic setting.
Does shockwave therapy hurt?
Most patients feel a tapping or pressure sensation that can be uncomfortable, but most people tolerate it well. The intensity is adjustable and your clinician will work within what you can handle. Some soreness for 24 to 48 hours after the session is common, especially in the first couple of treatments. This is a normal sign that your tissue is responding. You are generally advised to avoid high-impact activity on the treated area for 24 hours after each session.
How much does shockwave therapy cost?
At South Island Physiotherapy, shockwave is included in the standard rate for your physiotherapy or chiropractic appointment. There is no extra charge when shockwave is used in your session. You pay the standard appointment rate. See the pricing section below for full rates.
How many shockwave sessions will I need?
Most conditions respond to three to six sessions, usually spaced about a week apart. The number depends on your specific condition, how long you have had it, and how your body responds to treatment. Your clinician will map out a plan at your first assessment and keep you updated on your progress along the way.
Who should not receive shockwave therapy?
Shockwave is not suitable for everyone. It is not used during pregnancy, for patients on blood thinners or with clotting disorders, over active infections or open wounds, in areas where cancer is present, or near pacemakers or other implanted devices. Young patients with growth plates that have not yet closed should not have shockwave over those areas. Your clinician will screen for all of these before applying any treatment.
Is shockwave therapy covered by extended health benefits?
Yes, because shockwave at South Island Physiotherapy is billed as part of your physiotherapy or chiropractic appointment, not as a separate item. Your standard physiotherapy or chiropractic benefit covers the full appointment, shockwave included. Most extended health plans include these benefits and we direct bill to most major insurers. If you are unsure about your coverage, contact us before booking.
What is the difference between focused and radial shockwave therapy?
Focused shockwave concentrates the energy at a specific depth in the tissue, which makes it good for targeting precise structures like a calcium deposit or a tendon attachment point. Radial shockwave spreads the energy over a wider area, which suits larger regions or muscle trigger points better. Both are available at South Island Physiotherapy. Your clinician will choose the right type based on what they find in your assessment.
