Evidence-Based Rehabilitation

Move Beyond Passive Care and Build Durable Results That Last

Passive care gets you out of pain. Progressive exercise keeps you there. At our physiotherapy center in Victoria BC, our kinesiology-led exercise rehabilitation programs are designed for patients who are ready to move past symptom management and into the second and third stages of recovery: physical adaptation and functional revelation. Whether you are rebuilding strength after injury or surgery, managing a chronic condition, or working toward a specific performance goal, our registered kinesiologists build structured, evidence-based programs that deliver exercise rehabilitation to our Victoria clients with measurable outcomes.

Victoria Patients Trust Our Clinical Standards & Certifications

Registered Kinesiologists with BCRPA Affiliation

Our kinesiologists hold registration with the British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists (BCAK) and are trained in exercise prescription, movement assessment, and functional rehabilitation. Every program we design is grounded in current exercise science, not generic fitness templates.

5-Star Google Rating from 250+ Victoria Reviews

Our 5-star rating reflects patients from across Greater Victoria who have completed full programs, not just initial appointments. We measure success by what patients return to, whether that is recreational sport, demanding work, time with family, or simply moving without pain.

Locally Owned and Operated

South Island Physiotherapy is independently owned by physiotherapists Jason Nenzel, Colin Beattie, and Alec Myring, all of whom practise in this community. There are no franchise protocols or corporate exercise templates driving how we work. Every program reflects current evidence and the specific goals of the patient in front of us.

Integrated Clinical Team Under One Roof

Our kinesiologists work alongside CPTBC-registered physiotherapists, chiropractors, and registered massage therapists at our Saanich clinic. When your recovery requires collaboration across disciplines, we coordinate your care internally rather than sending you to a separate provider. That integration is a genuine clinical advantage.

Co-Owner Expertise in Strength and Conditioning

Co-owner Alec Myring brings extensive strength and conditioning experience that directly informs how our exercise programs are structured. His background bridges clinical rehabilitation and performance training, which means our programs are built on a stronger foundation than most clinical kinesiology offerings in Victoria.

Progressive Exercise Rehabilitation Programs

Our Progressive Exercise Rehabilitation Programs in Victoria BC

Post-Injury Exercise Rehabilitation

After physiotherapy addresses the acute phase of an injury, the work of rebuilding begins. Our post-injury exercise rehabilitation programs bridge the gap between clinical treatment and full return to activity. Working closely with our physiotherapy team, our kinesiologists design graded loading programs that restore strength, endurance, and movement confidence in a structured progression designed to prevent re-injury.

Post-Surgical Rehabilitation Exercise

Surgery changes tissue mechanics. Restoring function after a procedure requires targeted, evidence-based exercise that respects healing timelines while progressively rebuilding capacity. Our kinesiologists coordinate with our pre and post-surgical physiotherapy team to ensure your exercise program reflects your surgical protocol and advances at the right pace for your specific procedure and goals.

Chronic Pain and Condition Management

For patients managing chronic musculoskeletal conditions, persistent pain, or degenerative change, progressive exercise is among the most evidence-supported interventions available. Our programs for chronic pain and condition management use graded exposure and load management to build physical capacity over time, reducing reliance on passive treatment and helping patients develop confidence in their bodies again.

Active Rehabilitation for ICBC and WorkSafeBC Patients

Workplace injuries and motor vehicle accidents often leave patients in a cycle of passive treatment without a clear pathway back to work or full activity. Our active rehabilitation programs provide structured, goal-directed exercise for ICBC and WorkSafeBC clients, with documentation support to communicate progress to your adjuster or case manager. We handle third-party billing so you can focus on the work of recovery.

General Fitness and Healthspan Programming

Not every patient needs rehabilitation in the clinical sense. Some need a structured, evidence-based starting point for building fitness after years of inactivity, a health scare, or a significant life transition. Our kinesiologists design general fitness and healthspan programs for adults who want to move better, build capacity, and age with more independence. This is not personal training in the commercial sense – it’s exercise prescription from a regulated health professional.

Sport-Specific Performance Conditioning

For athletes who have completed injury rehabilitation and want to close the gap between clinical discharge and full sport performance, our sport-specific conditioning programs provide a structured bridge. Paired with our athletic testing and coaching service, these programs are built around your sport demands, not a generic return-to-sport template.

Why Victoria Patients Choose South Island Physiotherapy for Exercise Rehabilitation

Exercise Is the Prescription, Not the Afterthought

Many clinics finish a physiotherapy episode by handing patients a printed exercise sheet. At South Island Physiotherapy, progressive exercise is the core of how we think about lasting recovery. Our three-stage recovery model, moving through symptom management, physical adaptation, and functional revelation, places exercise at the centre of stages two and three. Passive care is a starting point. Exercise is what creates durable results.

Programs Built Around What You Want to Return To

A program for a 60-year-old hiker looks different from one for a 28-year-old returning to recreational hockey. We spend time understanding what functional capacity means for your life before we write a single exercise. That specificity is what separates a real rehabilitation program from a generic one.

Coordination Across the Full Clinical Team

Our kinesiologists have direct access to the physiotherapists, chiropractors, and massage therapists working in the same building. If a question arises about your presentation, a technique is flagged, or a new symptom emerges, the conversation happens within our team the same day. That internal communication protects your recovery timeline.

Measurable Progress at Every Stage

We use objective outcome measures at intake and throughout your program so that progress is tracked, not assumed. If a program is not producing the expected adaptation, we adjust. You will always know where you are in your rehabilitation arc and what the next milestone looks like.

Case Study: Exercise Rehab

Moving Beyond Chronic Pain to Restore Function

Patient: Lisa M., 49

Concern

Lisa had been dealing with persistent low back and hip pain for several years. She found herself avoiding activity due to fear of flare-ups and felt stuck in a cycle of discomfort that was limiting her daily life and ability to stay active.

assessment

Assessment identified reduced strength through the core and hips, decreased movement tolerance, and protective movement patterns contributing to ongoing pain and reduced function.

treatment approach

A progressive exercise rehabilitation program was developed to gradually build strength, improve movement confidence, and increase tolerance to activity. Emphasis was placed on safe, controlled progression and restoring normal movement patterns.

outcome

Lisa was able to move beyond chronic pain, improve her overall function, and return to the activities she enjoys with greater confidence, consistency, and significantly reduced discomfort.

how it works

Our Progressive Exercise Programs

Initial Kinesiology Assessment (60 Minutes)

Your first appointment is a full movement and functional assessment. We review your health history, current activity level, previous injuries or surgeries, and what you are trying to achieve. We then assess movement quality, strength baselines, and any functional limitations relevant to your goals. You will leave with a clear picture of where you are starting and a draft direction for your program.

Program Design

Based on your assessment findings, we build a progressive exercise program specific to your condition, goals, and training history. Every exercise has a reason. We explain the rationale for each component so you understand what adaptation we are targeting and why the progression is structured as it is. You will not receive a generic list.

Supervised Sessions and Progression

Follow-up sessions combine supervised exercise with program review and advancement. We assess how your body is adapting and progress the program accordingly, whether that means increasing load, introducing new movement patterns, or adjusting tempo and volume. Home exercise components are assigned and updated throughout.

Functional Milestones and Discharge

We discharge patients when they have the knowledge, capacity, and confidence to continue independently, not on a fixed session count. For some patients, that means a clear home program. For others, it means a referral to one of our strength and conditioning or athletic coaching services for ongoing performance development. Either way, you leave with a plan.

“Ariana was very thorough and went through various tests to diagnose my issues. She explained my conditions and demonstrated the exercises I needed to do. FAQs: Exercise Rehabilitation in Victoria BC

Physiotherapy focuses primarily on assessment and treatment of injury, pain, and physical dysfunction. Kinesiologists specialize in exercise prescription and movement analysis, making them best suited for the active rehabilitation phase of recovery once acute symptoms have been managed. At South Island Physiotherapy, our physiotherapy and kinesiology teams work together, so patients transition naturally between disciplines as their recovery progresses. The two services complement each other rather than compete.

Progressive exercise rehabilitation is appropriate for a wide range of patients: those finishing a physiotherapy episode who want structured continuation, patients managing chronic pain or degenerative conditions, adults returning to activity after surgery, ICBC or WorkSafeBC clients requiring documented active rehabilitation, and anyone who wants an evidence-based exercise program rather than a generic fitness plan. If you are unsure whether kinesiology is the right starting point, contact us and we will point you in the right direction.

An initial kinesiology assessment at South Island Physiotherapy is $120 for a 60-minute appointment. Follow-up sessions are $120 for 60 minutes, $90 for 45 minutes, and $70 for 30 minutes. Many extended health benefit plans include kinesiology coverage. Check your specific policy for annual limits and per-visit amounts. ICBC and WorkSafeBC patients may be eligible for covered active rehabilitation sessions. Contact our clinic to confirm your coverage before your first appointment.

The number of sessions depends on your starting point, your goals, and how quickly you adapt to the program. Some patients complete a focused 6-8 session block and continue independently. Others benefit from longer-term support through a complex recovery or a high-performance goal. We will give you an honest estimate at your assessment and revisit it as the program progresses. We do not extend programs beyond what is clinically indicated.

You can book directly with our kinesiology team without a prior physiotherapy referral. If your assessment reveals something that would benefit from physiotherapy, we will let you know and can arrange an internal referral within the clinic. Many patients start with physiotherapy and transition to kinesiology as their recovery advances, but neither pathway is mandatory.

Yes. South Island Physiotherapy handles third-party billing for ICBC and WorkSafeBC active rehabilitation. Our team is familiar with the documentation requirements for both programs and will manage the administrative side of your claim so your focus stays on your rehabilitation. Contact us to discuss your specific claim before booking.

Wear comfortable, flexible clothing that allows you to move freely. Athletic footwear is recommended. Bring any relevant medical records, physiotherapy discharge summaries, surgical reports, or imaging results if you have them, though these are not required to book. The more context you can provide at your first session, the more precisely we can design your initial program.
